The Art of Starting with Ahmed Al Baker

In our very first episode of season three of The Ajyal Show, Ahmed Al Baker shares a journey that didn’t begin with a script, but with instinct. Before filmmaking was widely recognised as a career path in Qatar, it lived quietly in the background, an idea waiting for the right moment to come into focus.

Ahmed’s own path began, like many do, with small steps driven by curiosity and experimentation. Working with friends, learning through online resources, and testing ideas with simple equipment, Ahmed began to develop his craft in an organic way. It was a process of discovery. Frame by frame, he began to shape an understanding of how local stories could carry a cinematic language of their own.

As Qatar’s creative industries developed further, so did the opportunities around filmmaking. Initiatives and platforms such as DFI began to open new doors, allowing filmmakers to connect, collaborate, and grow together. What started as an individual passion gradually became part of a wider, supportive ecosystem. One built on shared knowledge, ambition, and a collective drive to create.

Ahmed discusses how Katara Studios grew in the same way, gradually expanding from sound to screen. Commercial projects became a kind of creative engine, keeping ideas in motion, sharpening craft, and proving that progress often comes from what you keep doing, not just what you start.

From large-scale global moments to the everyday realities of production, Ahmed returns to a simple perspective. Don’t wait for the perfect opportunity to begin. Make the work, learn from it, and keep moving forward. Because every story, and every industry, is built one step at a time.
