Doha Film Institute’s Practical Labs are designed to strengthen technical filmmaking skills and to support the development of sustainable film industries across Qatar and the MENA region. The Cinematography Programme is the latest addition to that initiative, developed in collaboration with La Fémis, Qatar Museums and the French Institute in Qatar.

The programme is designed to assist emerging cinematographers to strengthen both their artistic vision and their technical skills. It is delivered over four in-person blocks between April and June 2027, combining workshops, studio practice, location shooting and collaborative filmmaking. Participants learn through hands-on exercises, mentorship and continuous feedback while exploring the complete cinematography workflow, from visual development to colour grading.

Applicants will be selected on the strength of their existing work, their visual approach and their commitment to a professional career as a Director of Photography. Places are limited, and attendance at all four blocks is required.

The programme is an opportunity for emerging cinematographers from the region to:

  • develop a strong understanding of cinematic language
  • strengthen their camera, lighting and composition skills
  • design visual approaches that support storytelling
  • understand the complete cinematography workflow
  • develop a personal visual style

As part of its broader vocational training initiative, DFI is expanding its Practical Labs to develop technical and crew-based skills across key filmmaking disciplines, including Assistant Directing, Production Design, Editing, Post-production, Lighting and Camera Techniques.

Together, these programmes provide emerging filmmakers and crew members with access to world-class training, hands-on experience and industry-ready skills, helping to develop the next generation of film professionals.
