Tunisian actress, director, and producer Afef Ben Mahmoud embarked on a rich artistic career from an early age, initially as a contemporary dancer and later as an actress, appearing in numerous television shows, theatre productions, and films.

Tunisian actress, director, and producer Afef Ben Mahmoud embarked on a rich artistic career from an early age, initially as a contemporary dancer and later as an actress, appearing in numerous television shows, theatre productions, and films.

She held lead roles under major Tunisian directors, including Nouri Bouzid’s ‘Making Of’ and ‘The Scarecrows’, and more recently in ‘Streams’ by Mehdi Hmili, receiving Best Actress awards at the Cairo International Film Festival in 2021. Afef established her own production company, Mésanges Films, and produced Nouri Bouzid’s latest film, ‘The Scarecrows’. The film had its world premiere in the official selection of the 2019 Venice Film Festival in the Sconfini section and won the Human Rights Award. Since then, Afef has co-produced and co-directed her first feature, ‘Backstage’, with Khalil Benkirane, which premiered in competition at the Giornate degli Autori in Venice 2023 and won the Cinema & Arts Award. And she is currently developing ‘Tkallem’ by Nejib Kthiri. Afef holds a Master's in Economics and Management, a Master's in directing and screenwriting, and a Master of Research in Image Design.
