On the French Riviera, two gangs of children compete at their favourite forbidden game of leaping from the red rocks into the Mediterranean. Barely five, Géo spends the summer scrambling over cliffs, dodging the gendarmes and falling for Ève, who already has a sweetheart in the rival gang. Cast with non-professional actors, Bruno Dumont’s sun-drenched film is a joyful, fearless portrait of childhood, with all its loves, rivalries and freedom.
On the French Riviera, two gangs of kids compete in the perilous game of cliff jumping. Géo, barely five years old, lives with his family in a mobile home and spends his days scrambling over the red rocks with his friends Rouben and Manon, raiding parked cars for sweets and watching the trains that run along the coast to Italy. When the gendarmes chase them away, the children simply plan to climb higher. Then Géo meets Ève, who belongs to the rival gang and already has a sweetheart, B. Over one summer, friendship blends with rivalry, and the first stirrings of the heart become a source of trouble.

Every day brings a new adventure: a dare on the cliffs, a squabble over loot from a parked car, a promise to meet again tomorrow and jump from even higher. Géo and Ève trade secrets about who loves whom and dream of catching the train to Italy together, while the rival gang closes ranks around her. Bathed in the bright blues, reds and yellows of a Mediterranean summer, Bruno Dumont's film is less about children than about childhood itself, the part of all of us that is always five years old. Fearless, funny and full of light, it is a film about love, jealousy, rivalry and, above all, freedom.
