Patrick is a gutsy, loveable but hopelessly inept monarch butterfly with one wing smaller than the other, who has never been able to fly. When he stows away on the monarchs’ great migration south, with his best friend Marty, a caterpillar, and Jennifer, a butterfly who is afraid of heights, he sets off on the adventure of a lifetime, braving storms, humans and three vengeful birds to prove that what we share matters more than what sets us apart.
Every autumn, millions of monarch butterflies set off on one of nature’s great journeys, flying thousands of miles south for the winter. Patrick, a gutsy, loveable but hopelessly inept teenage monarch, was born with one wing smaller than the other, and has never managed to fly. So when the migration leaves without him, he stows away in a milkweed trailer, with his best friend Marty, a caterpillar who is in no hurry to grow up, and Jennifer, a rebellious young butterfly who happens to be afraid of heights. Ahead of them lie wild weather, meddling humans and three villainous birds with a score to settle, and a journey that will ask Patrick to find a courage he never knew he had.

A bright, funny and big-hearted animated adventure from Canada and Germany, ‘Butterfly Tale’ “follows its unlikely trio on the long flight south, through storms, cities and open skies, to where the monarchs gather each winter. Beneath the slapstick and the soaring flight sequences is a gentle story about self-discovery and friendship, about learning that a weakness can become a strength, and the idea that the bonds we share matter more than the differences between us. A film for the whole family, and a perfect fit for an evening under the stars.
