Abandoned at 15 when his entire family left to join Daesh in Syria, Akmel, now 27, rebuilds his life in Tunisia through rap. As he prepares to become a father, he confronts his past to free himself from it.
In Tunisia, Akmel, 27, lives in Ksour Essef, a small town 200 kilometres from Tunis. At 15, his life changed dramatically: his family turned towards religious extremism. His older brother was radicalised and left to join Daesh in Syria, soon followed by his father, and shortly afterwards by his mother, who took his younger brother and sister with her. Akmel remained alone, in silence and incomprehension. For more than ten years, Akmel has survived as best he can. He takes on small jobs and is regularly harassed by the Tunisian authorities because of his family background, which he carries like a burden. In rap, he finds his escape. Music becomes his language, as he expresses his anger, pain and hope of finding his mother, detained in a camp in north-eastern Syria since the fall of Daesh in 2019. When he marries Cyrine and they expect a child, Akmel feels an essential need to break the curse and not pass on to his son a past he did not choose. Torn between rebirth and unhealed wounds, he seeks to reclaim his life, his name and his voice.
