Capturing one young woman’s conflicted journey out of war-torn Gaza, while supporters in Canada work to facilitate her passage before it is too late.
Soha, 27, is one of 130 Gazan graduate students who have so far survived a genocide and are now living in limbo — waiting for the Canadian government to process their entry into Canada, and under a ceasefire that has not stopped the death and destruction altogether. Soha’s dream is to come to Canada, finish her studies in peace, and then return home to Gaza. But her dream comes with conflicting feelings. Is she abandoning her home and family? When she returns, what will she find left of her homeland?
While Soha waits, university professors, students, and activists in Canada have been lobbying, advocating, and begging the Canadian government to fast-track, speed up and do whatever it takes to help the 130 Gazans get to Canada. It has been an uphill battle. The process is stuck in a bureaucratic purgatory. It has been over 18 months since Soha was offered a graduate student placement in Canada. In that time, she has survived Israeli bombardment, constant displacement, living in a tent, and a fire. ‘In Limbo’ will follow Soha’s conflicted journey from Gaza to Egypt to Canada, while supporters in Canada work to facilitate her passage before it is too late.
