Sealed beneath a mountain for centuries, Sun Wukong, the once-unstoppable Monkey King, is accidentally released by Jiang Liuer, a brave village boy, after a mysterious force snatches local children. Weakened and wary, Wukong begrudgingly agrees to help, joined by the bumbling Pigsy and a kindly monk. Their trek across perilous lands forces the fallen legend to confront fear, pride and responsibility, culminating in a showdown with the demon lord Hun Dun, where protecting others becomes his path back to true strength.
The story traces back to when the Monkey King created a tremendous uproar in the heavenly place, he has been pressed under Five Elements Mountain for five hundred years and become a legend. Another character, little orphan Jiang LiuEr, living in Chang’an City, always fascinates by the legend of Monkey King.

One day, Mountain Demons attack the Chang’an City and plunder away little children. Jiang LiuEr saves a little girl, but provokes Mountain Demons and is chased by. He runs into Five Elements Mountain and releases the Monkey King by lifting a seal on his body. Monkey King only wants to get back to his home - Mountain of Flowers and Fruits after he gains freedom, but since a seal on his wrist is still unsolved, Mountain King escorts Jiang LiuEr and little girl back to the Chang’an City reluctantly.

On the journey, they meet pig Ba Jie and White Dragon Horse (crucial characters in Pilgrimage to the West), becoming either loser or evil ill, but not heroes anymore. More importantly, in order to plunder little girl, the king of mountain demons arranges sinister dilemmas to prevent powerful Monkey King. However, after finding the Monkey King loses all his powers, Mountain Demons take away little girl. The Monkey King gives up the girl, whereas Jiang LiuEr decides to save the girl by himself…

On the date of eclipse, while the king of mountain demons prepares to through children into a big pot for alchemy, Jiang LiuEr rushes in for a final fight, but is easily controlled by mountain demons. At this crucial moment, the Monkey King is back…
