Ajyal Short Film Programme 1: Hidden Layers
A girl searches the dunes for the identity card she needs to enrol at the Beijing Opera Academy. It has been hidden from her.
A girl sifts through the dune to find the identity card she needs to enrol at the Beijing Opera Academy. Dorothea Sing Zhang traces her own mother’s origin story. Shot on 35mm, the film makes the dune a place of becoming rather than losing, and treats wanting something badly enough as its own kind of cure.
