Arab Short Film Programme 1: Hope Springs
It is time for change in the Arab world; time to revisit our history, our slogans, our illusions and fears. Time to destroy statues, cross borders and defy oppressors with hope and humour. As we make our way through this minefield, our determination and imagination will lead our steps.

Rated:PG Parental guidance is advised for 13 years and under.
While a voice on the radio explains the many varieties of “maqloubeh”, excitedly lauding the traditional Palestinian meal for its nutritional value, five young men make their own version of the dish, spiced with some good-natured debate over whether to use eggplant or cauliflower. But just as they sit down to eat their creation, they are rudely interrupted. ‘Maqloubeh’ provides a cheerful take on the absurdity of life in Palestine under occupation – and concludes that life goes on no matter what.
Five young art students awake to the sound of gunfire and bombardment. As the electricity has been cut and a curfew imposed, they do not know what is happening outside. To fill the time, the young men decide to prepare a maqloubeh for lunch. They all contribute to the preparation of this traditional dish. Meanwhile, their families call, trying to find out what is going on. Suddenly, unexpected guests arrive.
