International Short Films Programme 2: Traces That Remain
International Short Film Competition

In Iraq’s southern marshes, Ibrahim lives in quiet isolation with his buffalo, until an impending environmental disaster threatens both his world and his only companion.
Set in the remote marshlands of southern Iraq, ‘Beneath Which Rivers Flow’ is a non-verbal, documentary-style short that blends realism with subtle science fiction. It follows Ibrahim, a quiet boy whose only solace is his buffalo, as he senses a shift in the land, drying rivers, cracking earth, and a looming environmental collapse. Through immersive sound and striking visuals, the film reflects on the erosion of traditional life and honours Iraq’s Marsh communities facing an uncertain future.
