Unable to afford the journey to Mecca, Sulastri and a group of villagers take part in a ‘local hajj’ ritual in a cave, led by a spiritual guide.
Trapped by distance and the unaffordable cost of performing the Hajj, Sulastri, 68, and a group of villagers take part in a ‘local hajj’ ritual in a cave led by a spiritual guide. She does not realise that the journey is not towards Mecca but towards an illusion, and her own hopes. ‘Journey to Heaven’ is a portrait of faith in the midst of poverty, about how ordinary people try to draw closer to God when the world feels too distant from them.
