An absurd dark comedy that chronicles the experiences of a multi-generational Palestinian family as they navigate everyday life under occupation and apartheid in wild, witty and unorthodox ways.
The Al-Qassabis are your typical Palestinian family, loud, loving, slightly dysfunctional, and rooted in resistance. Hazem and Dima try to keep their kids in line, but in Jerusalem it is usually trouble that finds you. Sultan, 19, dreams of making a difference (mostly while lying down). Yasmina, 14, prefers action, especially when it involves pranking settlers.
When Grandma Ibtikar sneaks in from Ramallah disguised as a settler, she upends the household just as Israeli excavations begin under their neighbourhood, a so-called search for the “City of David” masking a campaign of forced displacement. As the family fights crumbling walls, corrupt bureaucracy, and settler schemes, Ibtikar’s real reason for visiting slowly unravels. A sharp, absurd, and deeply human tale, ‘Occupational Hazards’ is a dark comedy about a family resisting erasure with grit, gossip, and a whole lot of heart.
