Ahmed and his sister Layla, two children living in a Gaza camp, go to collect their daily meal. When Layla accidentally drops the food, Ahmad finds himself facing an impossible choice.
In a crowded refugee camp in Gaza, ten-year-old Ahmad does his best to take care of his little sister, Layla. Every day, they are given the same meal of lentils, and after months of eating nothing else, Layla cannot stand the sight or smell of them. Ahmad feels responsible, especially because he once promised her that he would bring real meat one day, just like their father used to. He dreams of finding a rabbit, something small, easy to cook and gentle enough to make her smile again. But everyone knows there are no rabbits in Gaza. As his search fails, Ahmad grows desperate. The only animal he can find is a stray cat wandering through the rubble. He does not want to harm it, but feels trapped between his promise and Layla’s hunger. He catches the cat, telling himself it is the only choice he has. When he brings it home, Layla surprises him. Instead of seeing food, she sees another hungry, frightened creature. She feels sorry for the cat and begins to care for it. Watching her, Ahmad is torn between keeping his promise and accepting that compassion may be the only thing they have left.
