The story of the filmmaker’s great uncle, who joined the secret National Liberation Front during the Algerian revolution. A revealing account of attempted murder, dark secrets and the settling of scores.
During the war in Algeria, El Hadi, the great uncle of filmmaker Damien Ounouri, joined his sister in France and became an active member of a secret National Liberation Front (FLN) armed group. His personal journey of attempted murder, hiding, imprisonment and finally deportation back to Algeria in 1962 tells the whole story. Now 69 years old, the film marks the first time El Hadi has revealed this dark chapter of his past.

About the Director

Damien Ounouri
Based in Algiers, Damien Ounouri is an Algerian director born in France. He studied film theory, developing his practice as a self-taught filmmaker. His documentary ‘Fidai’ (2012), co-produced by Chinese filmmaker Jia Zhangke, had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. His medium-length fiction film ‘Kindil El Bahr’ (2016) premiered at the Directors' Fortnight at the Cannes
