After a vandal spray-paints a threatening message on his family's restaurant, a Palestinian-American boy begins to transform in order to protect the restaurant and his mother.
Goodbye Habibi’ is a short narrative film that tells the story of Aladdin’s Café, a Middle Eastern restaurant struggling to survive in the American South. The film follows Nabila, the owner, and her 12-year-old son, Bassam, as they work together to keep the restaurant afloat during the summer. Nabila manages the kitchen, while Bassam, dressed as the character Aladdin, makes deliveries on a scooter designed to resemble a flying carpet. When Bassam discovers hateful graffiti at the back of the restaurant, he becomes obsessed with creating a superhero alter ego to track down the person responsible. As he begins to construct a new American persona rooted in militarism for self-preservation, Nabila becomes more determined to safeguard her child’s innocence and reconnect him with his heritage.
